It’s an honour to have my BAI-funded radio documentary “Coosheen’s Forgotten Seanchai and Son” featured in such an esteemed pantheon at UCD Festival @home the first virtual edition of the annual festival this weekend.

Here is the blurb!: Join UCD Creative Fellow Deirdre Mulrooney in her feature radio documentary “Coosheen’s Forgotten Seanchai and Son”, as she discovers a 1950 National Folklore Collection recording of forgotten Oireachtas winning Seanchai – Padraig “Croaker” Ó Briain – who was born in 1873 and lived on the site where her parents built a traditional cottage in the 1980s.

Enlisting the help of young Irish scholar, UCD’s Ailbe Van der Heide, UCD Professors Angela Bourke and Margaret Kelleher, and actor and UCD alumnus Pat Laffan, together they decipher and unravel the magic of Croaker’s idiosyncratic and site-specific, yet universal fairy tales.

Listen to a segment of this documentary here that tells the tale of the recording’s discovery and Deirdre’s collaboration with UCD. You can hear Pat Laffan’s full recording of the Seanchai’s tale here.

“Coosheen’s Forgotten Seanchai and Son” is a Deirdre Mulrooney Production originally broadcast on Newstalk, and funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland from the Television Licence Fee. It also features contributions by Val Geary and Anne Daly; and an original score, including “Caoineadh Chuasin” by Rossa O Snodaigh, recorded live in Newstalk by sound supervisor Neil Kavanagh.
