Ogoki Post has come into international focus thanks to Gord Downie\, lead singer of top Canadian band Tragically Hip’s latest album ‘Secret Path’\, the proceeds of which go to truth and reconciliation with Canada’s First Nations. Paud Mulrooney\, a school teacher from Limerick\, Ireland\, was on this path decades ago\, when he brought his wife and family to live with the Ojibway and Cree people\, and ran the local schools there at a critical period of transition from the Residential school system to more enlightened native community-run schools\, developing a new curriculum suited to native traditions and lifestyle. ‘True North’ reveals what drew Paud Mulrooney there – from his days in Trinity College Dublin to an encounter with Vietnam War Draft Dodgers who were forming a film co-op when he arrived to Toronto in the 1960s – bathed in the gorgeous hues of his original dreamy Super 8 reels and slow photography. ‘TRUE NORTH’ was nominated for best documentary at Richard Harris International Festival 2019; was selected for the Belgrade-Irish Festival 2018; and Canadian novelist Jane Urquhart shared the film with her Canadian Studies class when she held the Craig Dobbin Chair for Canadian Studies in 2018.

SUMMARY:UCD Festival @ Home/ Coosheen's Forgotten Seanchai and Son
DESCRIPTION:UCD Festival\, which is virtual this year due to Covid 19\, will feature my BAI-funded radio documentary which was broadcast on Newstalk\, “Coosheen’s Forgotten Seanchai and Son”\, in association with UCD’s National Folklore Collection. \nDeirdre Mulrooney unearths the vernacular magic of forgotten Irish language village Coosheen\, County Clare and its unsung storytellers –  a special place which despite being on the windswept “Wild Atlantic Way” today doesn’t even register on Google maps. \nOff the grid in West Clare\, on the Doonbeg road 2km North of well known ‘Victorian seaside resort’ Kilkee the road-sign on a bare\, ascending left turn announces “L2024”.  L2024?  You’d never guess that just over the brow of this hill\, descending into the mighty Atlantic towards infinity\, this modest boreen leads to what not so long ago was a thriving Irish language village of fisher folk\, kelp collectors\, and an award-winning storyteller with connections to Walt Disney. \nPreferring anonymity\, “Coosheen”\, with its magnificent Atlantic vista North towards the Aran Islands\, boasts no sign at all\, let alone the Iar Ghaeltacht sign to which it is entitled\, trumpeting its heritage on the “Wild Atlantic Way”.  Join producer Deirdre Mulrooney who was lucky enough to spend her childhood summers in this remote spot\, in her BAI-funded feature radio documentary “Coosheen’s Forgotten Seanchai and Son”\, as she discovers a 1950 National Folklore Collection recording of the forgotten Oireachtas winning Seanchai even they never knew about – Padraig “Croaker” Ó Briain –  who was born in 1873 and lived on the site where her parents built a traditional cottage in the 1980s. \nEnlisting the help of young Irish scholar Ailbe Van der Heide\, Professor Angela Bourke (Voices Underfoot; The Burning of Bridgie Cleary; Maeve Brennan: Homeless at the New Yorker) and actor Pat Laffan (Father Ted; The Snapper; Barry Lyndon; The Queen; Abbey Theatre Company)\, together they decipher and unravel the magic of Croaker’s idiosyncratic and site-specific\, yet universal fairy tales. \nCharting the transition from Clare Irish speaking Seanchai father to English language poet and memoirist son Paddy “The Poet” O’Brien (1920 – 1977)\, Aonghus Óg McNally (whose own grandfather Ray McNally\, creator of Hugh in Brian Friel’s 1980 play ‘Translations’\, had a house in Coosheen village)\, sings the poet’s Coosheen memoir and witty lyrics back to life. DESCRIPTION:TRUE NORTH: Paud Mulrooney’s Irish-Canadian Adventures in Super 8”\, is a half-hour film by Deirdre Mulrooney offering a rare window into the life of Native Canadians via an Irish Family who were fortunate enough to share their path in the 70s & 80s.  \n“TRUE NORTH” offers a unique representation of Irish-Canadian experience via Paud Mulrooney’s never-seen Super 8 films and self-developed photographs of life on Cat Lake and Ogoki Post Reserves in the 70s and 80s\, with his young family\, (including the film-maker). Ogoki Post has come into international focus thanks to Gord Downie\, lead singer of top Canadian band Tragically Hip’s latest album ‘Secret Path’\, the proceeds of which go to truth and reconciliation with Canada’s First Nations.
